Originally named Legacy until they learned of a jazz outfit of the same name, as children of the scene that birthed three of those four bands, Testament were the first of the second wave of Bay Area thrash. See the late 1980s best of the rest list here.If there was a Big Five, Testament would be in there, and The Legacy is more than enough of an argument as to why. See the middle 1980s best of the rest list here. Destruction – Eternal Devastation (1986).Mercyful Fate – Don’t Break the Oath (1984).See the early 1980s best of the rest list here. Diamond Head – Lightning to the Nations (1980).This compilation is just my take on the favorites of each year and the decade as a whole.Īnd while you are at it, why not check out my list for the definitive hard rock/heavy metal albums of the 1970s. While there is some consensus among music critics and metalheads on the best albums of each year and decade, there will of course be considerable variation from person to person. The 1980s were a great decade for heavy metal of pretty much all (sub)genres. Obviously the title to this list is fully tongue-in-cheek. In short, this is my brief testament to the best material from the second decade in the history of the greatest musical genre of all time. Links are included for each list if you want to get more into the details and my write ups for each of the winning albums and the honorable mentions.

If you are too lazy to do the math, I will just tell you that there were 78 albums spread over those preceding thirteen lists that are captured here in this compilation. I really enjoyed these albums and felt they were worthy of mention but for whatever reason they did not make the cut for my top six spots in their respective year. Those are collections of an additional six albums each over three sections of the decade: early, middle, late. The eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth lists are ‘best of the rest’ lists. This included ten lists of the best album from each year as well as five honorable mentions from each of those years. This list is essentially a compilation of my thirteen previous lists cataloging the best heavy metal albums of the 1980s. But since I know that you want to know more, I shall give you a little bit more. This another one of those lists where the title says just about all that you need to know.
